Chester has been a summer destination for wealthy Maritime families for over a century, and that legacy creates a short-term rental market unlike any other on the South Shore. The town sits on the western shore of Mahone Bay, overlooking the archipelago of islands that dot the bay, and its waterfront is dominated by the Chester Yacht Club — the focal point of a sailing community that has been active here since the late 1800s.

Chester Race Week, held every August, is the largest keelboat regatta in Atlantic Canada. During Race Week, every accommodation in Chester fills — hotels, B&Bs, and short-term rentals alike. Nightly rates spike to $300+ and properties book months in advance. But Race Week is just the peak of a broader summer season that runs from late June through mid-September, during which Chester draws a steady stream of affluent travellers, many of them return visitors who have been coming to the area for decades.

The town itself is small but refined. The Chester Playhouse hosts live theatre throughout the summer. The village centre has galleries, restaurants (including the Kiwi Café and the Fo'c'sle Tavern), and a general store that has been operating since 1865. Chester's Back Harbour beach is a local favourite, and the nearby islands — Big Tancook and Little Tancook, accessible by a short ferry ride — add a layer of adventure that appeals to families and explorers.

For STR operators, Chester's strength is its high average daily rate during a concentrated summer season. Properties with water views, dock access, or proximity to the yacht club command premium rates. The trade-off is a shorter earning window than Halifax — Chester is heavily seasonal, with limited demand from November through April. The most successful operators here maximize the summer peak and use strategic shoulder-season pricing to capture additional weeks in May, June, and October.
