Windsor claims the title of Birthplace of Hockey — the game was first played here by students at King's College School in the early 1800s, and the town's Long Pond is recognized as the site of those earliest matches. This hockey heritage draws a steady stream of sports history enthusiasts, particularly during the annual hockey heritage festival and events at the Birthplace of Hockey Museum.

The town sits at the confluence of the Avon River and the St. Croix River, and the Avon's extreme tidal changes — driven by the Bay of Fundy — create a landscape that shifts dramatically between high and low tide. The tidal causeway and the surrounding mudflats at low tide are a spectacle in themselves. Fort Edward National Historic Site, one of the oldest surviving military blockhouses in Canada, overlooks the rivers from a hilltop position and provides both historical interest and panoramic views.

Windsor's position is strategically valuable for STR. It sits at the junction of Highway 101 (the Halifax-to-Valley corridor) and Highway 14 (to Truro), making it a natural stopover for travellers moving between Halifax, the Annapolis Valley, and Central Nova Scotia. The town is roughly equidistant from Halifax and Wolfville (about 45 minutes each way), which means guests can use Windsor as a base for exploring both directions.

The town's commercial infrastructure includes grocery stores, restaurants, and services along the main corridor, and the historic downtown has seen gradual revitalization. Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, based in Windsor, is a renowned puppet theatre company that has toured internationally and presents performances locally that draw families and arts enthusiasts.
